A Home at Yellow Bluff
For many years, we made cherished memories at the Old Yellow Bluff fish camp, where we maintained a family property that my parents still own today. This camp was our sanctuary, a place where family bonds grew stronger amidst the excitement of fishing. However, when the camp was sold and transformed into a gated community, we made the tough decision to move on and find a new place that could capture the essence of our family’s adventures.
Discovering McIntosh County
In our search for a new fishing haven, we noticed that many friends from Yellow Bluff had relocated to McIntosh County. As we explored the area, it quickly became evident that this was the right spot for us. My brothers, Dad, and I used to embark on annual trips down the Oconee River, floating all the way to the Altamaha River and up the intracoastal to Dad’s house in Liberty County. These trips fostered a sense of belonging that made Darien feel like home.
The Thrill of Fishing Tournaments
Growing up, fishing was more than a hobby; it was a passion. We participated in Kingfish tournaments and became quite skilled at it. However, when conditions were rough or gas prices soared, we turned our attention inshore, targeting trout, reds, and flounder. Competing in local tournaments brought us together as a family and deepened our love for the sport.
Memories of Clearwater
Family vacations to Clearwater added another layer to our fishing journey. We would often board party boats, sharing exciting days on the water. The sight of the gleaming sport fishing boats in the harbor captivated me, with their stunning Mahogany and Teak finishes. I made a vow that one day, I would own a boat like those, although that dream has yet to materialize. What did materialize, however, was an incredible opportunity on the Darien waterfront.
A New Chapter in Darien
Fast forward to today, we purchased a home in Darien while maintaining our successful family printing business near Athens. The call of the saltwater became stronger after our last son graduated and headed off to college. I asked my wife to scout for commercial investment properties for us to consider for retirement, never imagining she would secure the Old Brown Seafood property right on the waterfront.
The Birth of a Dream
The acquisition of the Old Brown Seafood property reignited my childhood dreams of Clearwater and fishing. As an avid fisherman, I regularly travel to the mountains to fly fish for trout and have ventured to the Florida Keys for tarpon. This inspired us to create a vision for a small marina in Darien—one that would serve the fishing community and provide quality gear, a safe place to keep boats, and a welcoming spot to relax and share stories after a day on the water.
A Unique Sporting Destination
While the Georgia coast is a remarkable fishery, it has often been overlooked as a sporting destination compared to Florida or Louisiana. We believe that Darien has the potential to become a destination spot for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. McIntosh County is one of the most undeveloped regions on the Georgia coast, offering a wealth of outdoor activities and access to the Altamaha River, one of the largest freshwater outflows on the eastern seaboard.
